Estonia Lighthouse Stamp, 27 Oct 2016

Since 1996 Eesti Post has issued at least one stamp in the lighthouse and nautical chart series each year. The latest in this series will be issued on 27 Oct 2016 – in just a few days. It features Virtsu Lighthouse. The original lighthouse on this sight was destroyed by Russian forces in 1917 and it’s replacement was subsequently destroyed by retreating German forces in 1944. The current lighthouse was built in 1951. Let’s hope it has a long and useful life.

Norway Lighthouse Stamps, 1 Oct 2016

On 1 October 2016 Norway Post issued a set of two stamps in an ongoing lighthouse series. The first stamp shows the two Sandvigodden lighthouses which are located at the east end of Hisøy Island at the approach to Arenal. The first lighthouse, shown on the right, was built in 1844 and has been inactive since 1934 when it was replaced by a slightly taller structure immediately adjacent to it.

The second stamp features Sklinna Lighthouse located on the island of Heimøya in the Sklinna archipelago midway up the west coast of Norway. This is a cast iron structure housing a 2nd order Fresnel lens.
