Malta 2013

On 20 May 2013 Malta issued a 3-stamp set commemorating European Maritime Day.  The 26€ stamp shows St. Elmo Lt. and the 97€ stamp shows both St. Elmo Lt. and Ricasoli Breakwater Lt. These lights mark the entrance to Grand Harbor at Valleta with St. Elmo being on the west breakwater and Ricasoli on the east. A joint issue souvenir sheet with Curacao is scheduled to be released on 20 August. At the upper left of the sheet just below the “J” is the location of Ricasoli breakwater light. A higher resolution image will be needed to see if the light is actually visible here.

2012 Malta – Operation Pedestal

On 10 Aug 2012 Malta issued a series of 88 stamps to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Operation Pedestal in 1942. Operation Pedestal was a British campaign to supply the island nation of Malta during World War II and consisted of a convoy of 14 merchant ships. Only 5 of those ships made it through to the Grand Harbor of Valetta. 7 of the stamps show lighthouses in and around Grand Harbor.
