More Columbus Lighthouse Stamps

Thanks to Carlos Silvano for providing these images. As noted in a previous post, the Columbus Lighthouse is not truly a lighthouse but there have been many stamps issued commemorating it. The Dominican Republic stamps shown here were issued in 1928 before the design of the monument was determined.

Nicaragua Columbus Lighthouse stamps

These stamps were issued by Nicaragua on 1 Sep 1945 but were just recently added to this site. The Columbus Lighthouse (Faro a Colon) is located near Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and was built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ voyage to America in 1492. It is a huge cross-shaped structure that serves as a museum and the claimed mausoleum of Christopher Columbus. Reportedly, the lights (more than 100 of them) on the lighthouse are rarely lit but can be seen as far away as Puerto Rico when they are burning.
